    AMERICA'S SECOND MINE DISASTER THIS MONTH - AT MOAB, UTAH.RESCUE WORKERS HAVE BEEN BATTLING WITH GAS, FLOODING, AND MECHANICAL TROUBLES IN DESPERATE EFFORTS TO REACH AT LEAST FIVE MEN ENTOMBED ALIVE HALF A MILE (825 METRES) UNDERGROUND.25 WERE WORKING BELOW WHEN GAS EXPLODED ON TUESDAY.

    YESTERDAY (WEDNESDAY), TWO WERE BROUGHT SAFELY TO THE SURFACE SUFFERING ONLY FROM SHOCK AND BURNS.THEN RESCUE OPERATIONS WERE BROUGHT TO A HALT WHEN THE "LIFT BUCKET" USED IN THE SHAFT WAS STALLED BY MECHANICAL FAILURE.RESCUERS THEMSELVES WERE TRAPPED IN THE SHAFT FOR NEARLY AN HOUR BEFORE THE BUCKET RESUMED ITS DESCENT.

    THE TWO MEN RESCUED SAID THEY THOUGHT THAT AT LEAST FIVE OTHERS WERE STILL ALIVE, AFTER BUILDING WALLS OF DEBRIS TO SEAL OFF THE DEADLY GASES.MINE OFFICIALS SAID CARBON MONOXIDE GAS HAD KILLED EIGHT MEN, WHOSE BODIES HAVE BEEN RECOVERED.THE FATE OF THE OTHER TEN IS STILL NOT KNOWN.

    TODAY, THE TWO RESCUED MINERS CRITICISED RESCUE METHODS AND LEFT THEIR HOSPITAL BEDS TO JOIN IN THE SEARCH.IN PENNSYLVANIA, LITTLE HOPE IS HELD FOR A MINER TRAPPED BELOW FOR 16 DAYS.
