RHODESIANS WILL SOON BE ABLE TO BUY THE FIRST POSTAGE STAMPS EVER PRINTED IN THEIR COUNTRY. THE STAMPS ARE BEING ISSUED BY THE IAN SMITH GOVERNMENT TO MARK THE UNILATERAL DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE ON NOVEMBER 11.

LIKE MOST BRITISH TERRITORIES, RHODESIA'S POSTAGE STAMPS UNTIL NOW HAVE BEEN PRINTED IN BRITAIN. BUT SINCE THE ANNOUNCEMENT A WEEK AGO THAT THE STAMPS WERE GOING TO BE ISSUED, A LOCAL PRINTING WORKS IN SALISBURY. HAS BEEN BUSY PRINTING A SUFFICIENT NUMBER FOR DISTRIBUTION TO THE COUNTRY'S POST OFFICE NETWORK.

THE STAMP TO BE ISSUED IS A TWO-SHILLINGS-AND-SIXPENCE MAUVE STAMP BEARING A PORTRAIT OF QUEEN ELIZABETH, RHODESIA'S COAT-OF-ARMS AND THE WORDS: 'INDEPENDENCE 11TH NOVEMBER'. THEY ARE EXPECTED TO GO ON SALE IN ABOUT A WEEK'S TIME.
