    Jordan's King Hussein travelled north of Amman on Monday (29 May) to Al-Bags and the inauguration of the Jordan Satellite Earth Station. The King was accompanied by Prince Hassen, Prime Minister Ahmad Al-laouzi, and several other high senior officials.

    The Jordan Station provides for a two-way television link, enabling the exchange of television programmes between Jordan and other countries. In addition, the station has 24 telephone channels, which can be increased to 32. One telephone channel can be utilised for 24 telegraph circuits. Telegraphed telex services can be routed throughout the world either by direct line or through international transit centres.

    The site of the station, 25 kilometres north of Amman, was chosen o as to fulfil all geographical and technical requirements of space telecommunications.

    SYNOPSIS: North of Amman on Monday at Al-Baqa, a helicopter arrived, carrying an official party led by Jordan's King Hussein. Their purpose was to attend the inauguration of Jordan's Satellite Earth Station.

    The King was accompanied by Prince Hassan and Prime Minister Ahmad Al-Laouzi. The site at Al-Baqa was chosen for its remoteness -- far from industrial centres and airports and surrounded by hill which form a protection ring, all necessary geographical requirements for space telecommunications.

    The Jordan station provides for a two-way television link, enabling the exchange of television programmes between Jordan and other countries. The earth station was constructed with the cooperation and advice of two Japanese engineering companies, and is operated under the auspices of the Jordan Television Authority.
