    In Mauritania, two men arrested for forging banknotes in the Ouigiya (UM), French Franc, Central African Franc and dollar, are said by police to have been part of an international network of forgers with operations in Senegal, Algeria, Morocco, France, Switzerland and Italy.

    Sanko Toursy and Karamoko Soumarek are said by the police to be old offenders in Senegal and to have been in great demand by their Mauritanian associates who wanted them to operate in Mauritania. They're said to have operated for a financial controller in Senegal.

    A third man, Commercial Traveller, Fofana Bakary, is accused of complicity. Police say that they seized forging plant when they arrested the two men following a report to them by a man who had been approached by Bakary about distributing the forged notes.

    They say that M El Mamy Ould Abd Samed was approached by Fofana Bakary who told him be had a "golden opportunity"; he knew of two Gambians who had a large sum is Central African Frances and who had plates to make these and the UM, French Franc and dollar.

    Bakary said that these men needed a businessman to distribute the notes and that they would want an advance of a million Ougiya for which they would pay double.

    M Samed said that he was prepared in principle to find a distributor but he went to he police and the man he took along purporting to be a businessman was in fact a police inspector.

    They insisted that they wanted to see the forging plates and equipment before they would buy the notes and the two forgers agreed to show this to M Samed.

    He went back to the police after seeing the equipment and the police, who'd surrounded the area, arrested the two men.

    SYNOPSIS: In Mauritania, a forger is confronted with evidence against him. Two men have been arrested for forging local currency, the Ouigiya, French France, Central African Francs and dollars.

    The men had Gambian passports and they are said to have belonged to an international forging network with branches in six other countries.

    Sanko Toursy and Karamoko Soumarek are said to be old offenders in Senegal. A Mauritanian commercial traveller Fofana Bakery has also been arrested and charged with complicity in the affair. Notes and forging equipment have been seized by the police.

    The police say the prisoners were arrested because a man Bakary approached to get the forged notes distributed pretended to go along but told the police.
