  • Description

THE LEADER OF THE SELF-PROCLAIMED REPUBLIC OF BIAFRA, COLONEL ODUMEGWU OJUKWU, HAS BLAMED THE FALL OF ENUGU -- THE EASTERN REGION CAPITAL -- ON HIS OWN TROOPS WHO SHOT THEIR COMRADES IN THE BACK AND SHELLED THE REBEL CAPITAL THEMSELVES.

ON MONDAY (OCTOBER 9) FEDERAL TROOPS MOVED INTO ALL SECTION OF ENUGU AND BY THE AFTERNOON HAD ELIMINATED SNIPER FIRE AND MOUNTED GUARD ON ALL IMPORTANT BUILDINGS IN THE CITY.

COLONEL OJUKWU SPOKE YESTERDAY AT A MEETING IN UMUAHIA, ABOUT 80 MILES (128 KMS) SOUTH OF ENUGU - THE FIRST FIRM INDICATION THAT BIAFRAN LEADERS HAD MOVED THEIR HEADQUARTERS OUT OF THE CAPITAL.

THE 33-YEAR-OLD LEADER BLAMED THE CAPTURE OF ENUGU, THE UNIVERSITY TOWN OF NSUKKA AND OTHER AREAS ON BETRAYAL, SABOTAGE AND TREACHERY BY f"A NUMBER OF OFFICERS IN POSITIONS OF TRUST" IN THE BIAFRAN ARMY.

REPORTS SAY THAT LIEUTENANT-COLONEL YAKUBU DANJUMA, THE YOUNG NORTHERN OFFICER WHO LED THE ATTACK ON THE BREAKAWAY STRONGHOLD, MOVED HIS HEADQUARTERS INTO ENUGU ON MONDAY WHILE HIS TROOPS WERE STILL TRYING TO SECURE THE NORTHERN EDGE OF THE CITY. COLONEL DANJUMA HAS APPEALED TO THE PEOPLE OF THE VIRTUALLY DESERTED CITY TO RETURN TO THEIR HOMES. FORMERLY, 60,000 PEOPLE LIVED THERE.

ENUGU ITSELF DOES NOT SEEM TO HAVE BEEN TOO BADLY DAMAGED IN THE SHELLING WHICH PRECEDED ITS FALL. ALTHOUGH THE PARLIAMENT HOUSE OF THE EASTERN REGION WAS SLIGHTLY DAMAGED, THE LUXURIOUS PRESIDENTIAL HOTEL ESCAPED INTACT..... BUT EMPTY.
