Background: In northern Africa Chad has suspended diplomatic relations with the Libyan Jamahiriyah after accusations of 'blatant Libyan aggression' against the republic. Hamza Mahfoud, the Jamahiriyah's ambassador to Chad, left the capital of N'Djamena on February 10th.

SYNOPSIS: The remainder of the embassy staff were given until Monday (13 February) to leave the country. Chad's action followed an appeal issued by President Felix Malloum to friendly countries to intervene militarily against the Libyan Jamahiriyah. He told members of the diplomatic corps that Libyans had been directly involved in clashes between guarrillas and government troops.

Fighting has been taking place in northern Chad against the Chad National Liberation Front, which is trying to overthrow President Malloum's government.

The Libyan Bank of Chad also was closed following the suspension of diplomatic relations. President Malloum was hoping for help from Western nations including the former colonial power of France. In the late 1960s and early 1970s France provided several thousand troops in support of the government and still assists the army with supplies and logistical help.
