  • Description

EARLY MORNING LONDON WAS GIVEN A CHANCE TODAY (TUESDAY) TO SEE DONALD CAMPBELL'S GBP1 1/2 MILLION 'BLUEBIRD'. OUTSIDE AUSTRALIA HOUSE WAS THE CAR IN WHICH CAMPBELL WILL ATTEMPT TO BREAK THE WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD AT LAKE EYRE, AUSTRALIA, ONE OF THE LONELIEST PLACES IN THE WORLD.

THE 5,000 H.P. BLUEBIRD, DEVELOPED OVER THE LAST SEVEN YEARS BY 72 BRITISH COMPANIES, WILL BE SHIPPED TO AUSTRALIA BY THE S.S. "WOODARA" ON JANUARY 3, REACHING MELBOURNE ON JANUARY 31. IT WILL BE EXHIBITED THERE WITH CAMPBELL'S RECORD BREAKING HYDROPLANE AT THE INTERNATIONAL TRADE FAIR IN FEBRUARY.

MR. WYNNE-MORGAN, CONTROLLER OF THE BLUEBIRD PROJECT, SAID WHEN HE ARRIVED IN SYDNEY LAST WEEK THAT THE PROBLEM IS WHETHER THE CAR CAN BE KEPT ON THE GROUND AT SPEEDS OF 400 MILES AN HOUR OR MORE - IT COULD BECOME AIRBORNE.

HE SAID CAMPBELL WOULD PROBABLY MAKE HIS RECORD BID IN MAY. IF HE SETS A NEW RECORD IT MIGHT BE "VERY NEAR THE LIMIT OF SPEED A CAR CAN GO", AND THEREFORE THE RECORD MIGHT STAND FOREVER.

DONALD CAMPBELL SAID RECENTLY THAT HE FELT HIS CAR TO BE "NOW AS SAFE AS ANYTHING CAN BE. I LIKE TO THINK THAT IT IS 99 PER CENT SAFE". HIS LAST ATTEMPT TO BEAT JOHN COBB'S RECORD OF 394.2 M.P.H. - SET UP AT BONNEVILLE SALT FLATS, UTAH, IN 1947 - ENDED WHEN BLUEBIRD WAS WRECKED AT UTAH IN 1960 AND CAMPBELL FRACTURED HIS SKULL AFTER THE MACHINE HAD ROLLED FOR 1,000 YARDS.
