  • Description

A week-long religious observance in Quebec City, Canada, celebrating the 300th anniversary of the arrival in New France of North America's first Roman Catholic prelate, was attended - on behalf of Pope John - by Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani.

Delegates from Canada, the United States, Britain, France, Belgium and Communist China also attended. From Canada alone, 81 bishops and archbishops were present for the occasion.

Cardinal Ottaviani holds the high position of Vice-Prefect of the Holy Office and is regarded as one of the most influential personalities in the Vatican.

The bishop honoured by the Quebec celebrations is Monsignor Francois de Montmorency-Laval, bishop of Quebec for 29 years until his retirement through ill health in 1688. He retired to Quebec Seminary, which he had founded, and died in 1708 aged 85.
