  • Description

Six killed and thirty injured was the sad toll at Langa, an African township near Cape Town, South Africa, March 21, when police fired into a huge crowd of Africans demonstrating against the Government Pass Law which restricts movements of African citizens.

The same day, a more serious incident at Sharpeville, near Johannesburg, resulted in at least 64 deaths and over 150 cases of injury among a crowd of African anti-Pass demonstrators fired on by police.

Shooting began after police to break up a meeting of Africans, who, sponsored by the Pan-Africanist Congress, were protesting against what they termed the "Slave Law". Angered, the huge crowd surrounded the police station, and the order was given to fire into the mob.

South African Premier, Dr Verwoerd, announced March 23 that two Judges would be appointed as one-man commissions to enquire into the two incidents. The following day he banned both the African National Congress and the Pan-Africanist Congress, and issued a proclamation banning public meetings of all races, with the exception of Church services and other approved functions.

International repercussions to the shootings included demonstrations outside South Africa House, London, UK..official comments from both the American and British Governments .. and an application by 29 Afro-Asian members for the South African situation to be discussed by the Security Council of the United Nations.
