Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia arrived in Madrid on Tuesday for a three-day state visit. The Spanish Head of State, met Haile Selassie at the airport, with a full state welcome. Later, the two Heads of State travelled together by car to Madrid. As they entered the outskirts, a Royal salute echoed across the city for the Emperor.
It's the Emperor's third visit to Spain, and is in response to a long-standing invitation from General Franco. The occasion has aroused special interest in view of Emperor Selassie's vanguard action against the dictators of Europe in the 1930's.

At the airport to meet him last Tuesday was General Franco, the Spanish Head of State, and Prince Juan Carlos, who has informally been named the next Head of State. It's Emperor Selassie's third visit to Spain.
The visit of the Emperor to Spain has aroused considerable interest in view of his vanguard action in the 1930's against the European dictatorships, including in Spain.
When plans for the visit were announced earlier this month, the Ethiopian government said it was expected to strengthen the friendly relations between the two countries. The last time emperor Selassie visited Spain was in 1967, when he spent a short holiday in Palma, Majorca.
In Madrid, the Lord Mayo greeted the Emperor. Emperor selassie said how touched he was by the welcome from the Spanish people. Later, the two leaders drove to the prado palace for talks. The Emperor's visit will take him to Valencia, and on Thursday, the last day of
his visit, he will visit Toledo.
