  • Description

Ceylon went to the polls July 20 and put the Freedom Party of the widow of the assassinated former prime minister, Mrs. Siriamavo Bandaranaike, into power. This general election ousted the ruling Conservative pro-Western United National Party of prime minister Dudley Senanayake' and assured Mrs. Bandaranaike of becoming the only woman prime minister in the world.

Voting was orderly and quiet in the capital Colombo. By law campaigning stopped the day before and the lull brought something of a holiday atmosphere to the city as voters strolled leisurely to the booths.

Among the voters were Mr. J. R. Jayawardena, outgoing finance minister and his wife. They were among the many early women voters to queue at the polling stations amid monsoon showers. Most of the party leaders were in their constituencies and had earlier cast their votes by post.

Left-wing voters of the Communist and Trotskyist parties opted for Mrs. Bandaranaike under an alliance with her Freedom Party. The Freedom Party is pledged to nationalise tea, rubber, banking and insurance.
