  • Description

TANKS, BULLDOZERS AND FLAME-THROWERS WERE CALLED IN FOR OPERATION MANHATTAN, THE LARGE-SCALE AMERICAN MISSION DESIGNED TO UNCOVER VIET CONG STRONGHOLDS IN THE AREA BETWEEN THE SAIGON RIVER AND HIGHWAY 13.

VILLAGES IN THE AREA WERE SYSTEMATICALLY SEARCHED AND CLEARED. IN THE VILLAGE OF XA DINH PHOUC THE MEN WERE PARADED BEFORE A VIET CONG INFORMANT WHILE THE WOMEN AND CHILDREN WERE GIVEN CANDY, CANNED MILK, MEDICAL ATTENTION AND HELICOPTER RIDES.

THERE WAS LITTLE INDICATION OF VIET CONG OCCUPATION THERE, BUT ABOUT TWO MILES AWAY, TANKS OF THE 11TH ARMOURED CAVALRY HAD FOUND AND CLEARED A SMALL VIET CONG STRONGHOLD.

THE TANKS SMASHED INTO BUNKERS, SCHOOLS, STOREHOUSES AND REST HOUSES USED BY THE VIET CONG.

ONE SCHOOL HOUSE WAS SEARCHED AND THEN DYNAMITED.

THERE WERE INDICATIONS OF A RECENT EVACUATION FROM THE CASE CAMP -- COOKING POTS WERE FOUND, STILL WARM AND CALENDARS CARRIED THE SAME DAY'S DATE.

WHEN FORTIFICATIONS HAD BEEN DESTROYED AND EQUIPMENT AND FOOD SUPPLIES HAD BEEN CONFISCATED, A FLAME-THROWER WAS TURNED ON THE AREA.

THE REMNANTS OF THE CAMP AND THE SURROUNDING JUNGLE WERE BURNED TO THE GROUND.
