    THE LONDON TO SYDNEY AIR RACE PRODUCED A SPECTACULAR FINISH ON SUNDAY, WITH 59 AIRCRAFT TOUCHING DOWN AT SYDNEY'S BANKSTOWN AIRPORT TO COMPLETE THE FINAL AUSTRALIAN LEG OF THE 12.000 MILE (19,312 KM) MARATHON.

    IN THE FINAL HANDICAP PLACINGS, BRITISH CREWS CARRIED OFF THREE TOP PRIZES IN THE RACE.

    THE FORMER BRITISH WAR-TIME PILOTS, CAPTAIN BILL BRIGHT AND CAPTAIN FRANK BURTON, WERE DECLARED OVERALL WINNERS. THEY COLLECT THE PRIME MINISTER'S TROPHY AND THE B.P. AUSTRALIA PRIZE WORTH 25,000 AUSTRALIAN DOLLARS (GBP11,500 STERLING).

    FLYING A BRITISH-MADE BRITTEN-NORMAN ISLANDER -- A SHORT HAUL, 10-PASSENGER AIR TAXI -- THEY HAD ALREADY WON THE TROPHY FOR THE LONDON TO ADELAIDE SECTION OF THE RACE. THEIR AIRCRAFT WAS FLOWN TO AUSTRALIA TO MEET AN EXPORT ORDER.

    AN AUSTRALIAN CREW, FIRST TO ARRIVE IN SYDNEY, WERE AWARDED SECOND PLACE OVERALL. ANOTHER BRITISH CREW, D.M. PARSONS AND ARTHUR WINGNALL, TOOK THIRD PLACE IN THEIR PIPER TWIN COMMANCHE.

    BRITAIN'S SOLO WOMAN FLYER SHIELA SCOTT SURVIVED HARROWING STORMS, TECHNICAL TROUBLES AND A FORCED LANDING TO WIN THE PRIZE FOR AN "ALL-WOMEN" CREW.
