    BRITAIN'S CHANCELLOR OF THE EXCHEQUER, MR JAMES CALLAGHAN, RESIGNED TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY), AND HAS EXCHANGED JOBS WITH HOME SECRETARY MR ROY JENKINS. IT WAS REVEALED THAT THE CALLAGHAN TENDERED HIS RESIGNATION ABOUT 11 DAYS AGO -- SHORTLY BEFORE HE ANNOUNCED DEVALUATION OF THE POUND STERLING.

    THE 55-YEAR-OLD CHANCELLOR SAID IN HIS RESIGNATION LETTER THAT HE HAD BEEN CONSCIOUS OF "GOING BACK ON PLEDGES GIVEN TO A NUMBER OF OVERSEAS COUNTRIES" WHEN HE DECIDED ON DEVALUATION.

    HE SAID: "I DO NOT THINK IT RIGHT THAT I SHOULD CONTINUE IN THE OFFICE, AND SO WITH THE DEEPEST REGRET I MUST ASK YOU TO ACCEPT MY RESIGNATION."
    IN HIS RESIGNATION LETTER MR CALLAGHAN ALSO OFFERED TO RETURN TO THE BACK BENCHES. HE HAS ASKED IN AN INTERVIEW WHY HE HAD MADE THE OFFER, INSTEAD OF SEEKING AN ALTERNATIVE CABINET APPOINTMENT:
    MR JENKINS WAS ALSO ASKED HOW HE FELT ABOUT THE CHANGE.
