Background: A EUROPEAN RECORD BREAKING RUN BY ???JOHNSTON IN THE SIX MILES HIGHLIGHTED THE FIRST DAY'S EVENTS IN THE BRITISH AMATEUR ATHLETICS CHAMPIONSHIPS AT WHITE CITY, LONDON, TODAY (FRIDAY).

THE 27-YEAR-OLD CAMBRIDGE SOLICITOR HAD A TIME OF 27 MINUTES 22.2 SECONDS, THE BEST EVER BY A BRITISH ATHLETE. JOHNSTON, WHO HAS BEEN IN MEXICO FOR THE LAST NINE MONTHS, WAS ALWAYS WITH THE LEADERS AND WON EASILY. HE COVERED THE LAST MILE IN 4 MINUTES 21 SECONDS AND THE LAST 440 YARDS IN 60 SECONDS DEAD.

A BIG SURPRISE WAS THE ARRIVAL OF THE SOUTH AFRICAN STAR SPRINTER, PAUL NASH. NASH HAD SAID THAT HE WOULDN'T BE COMPETING. THIS TRANSVAAL SPRINTER IS ONE OF THE WORLD'S FASTEST MEN OVER 100 YARDS AND 100 METRES BUT HE WON'T BE COMPETING AT THE MEXICO OLYMPICS NOW THAT SOUTH AFRICA HAS BEEN FORCED OUT. NASH WON HIS HEAT OF THE 100 YARDS WITH AN EFFORTLESS 10.1 SECONDS RUN AND IS HOT FAVOURITE TO WIN THE FINAL TOMORROW (SATURDAY).

THE HAMMER THROW WAS WON BY HUNGARY'S LAZAR LOVASZ WITH A HEAVE OF 217 FEET TWO INCHES (66.19 METRES). JAPANESE ATHLETES FILLED THE NEXT THREE PLACES. TAKEO SUGAHARA, SECOND, HAD A BEST THROW OF 216 FEET 10 INCHES (66.09 METRES). THIRD WAS YOSHIHISA ISHIDA WITH 203 FEET 10 INCHES(62.13 METRES). AND FOURTH PLACE WENT TO KOICHI OHSHITA WITH 201 FEET 10 INCHES (61.52 METRES).
