  • Description

Against a background of continuing heavy fighting on the Golan Heights, United States Secretary of State Henry Kissinger continued on his latest and toughest Middle East peace mission on Friday (3 May). After discussions with Israeli leaders din Jerusalem, Dr. Kissinger flew to Damascus in an effort to resolve Syrian-Israeli hostility.

At the end of his Damascus talks, there were conflicting reports on the amount of progress made. Some reports stated that Syrian President Hafez Al-Assad had "strongly refused" Israeli ideas on disengagement.

But United States travelling Ambassador Robert McCloskey said the seven hours of talks in Damascus had been constructive and "some progress was made".

The sounds of the continuing battle on the Golan Heights, only 25 miles (40 kms) from Damascus, gave urgency to Dr. Kissinger's fifth Middle East peace mission. And Syria has warned that fighting will increase if Israel does not make concessions -- namely a total withdrawal from occupied Arab territory.

Before flying back to Jerusalem today (Saturday) to continue mediation, Dr. Kissinger was to discuss his findings so far with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat in Alexandria.
