    Many of the world's leading canoeists and kayakists took part in the annual international Moscow regatta from May 18 to 20.The event -- the 11th of its kind -- was held at the Krylatskoye Olympic rowing basin.With champions from 14 countries taking part, competition was fierce.Many of those competing were from nations which have decided not to take part in the Los Angeles Olympics in July.Perhaps the most exciting race was the women's 500 metres kayak single sculls.Galina Alexyeva of the Soviet Union (No.8), who won the gold medal in the 1976 Olympics, just held off the challenge from East Germany's Katrin Gize, to win by 0.15 of a second, in 2 minutes, 04.05 seconds.The men's 500 metres canoe single sculls, went of Olaf Heukrodt of East Germany (No.3).The traditional event, is called the Julia Ryabtchinskaya Memorial competition, after the late Soviet champion of that name.The Soviet Union decided in 1973 to hold an annual international regatta in her honour.
