  • Description

TWENTY-FIVE YEARS AGO TOMORROW, ON D-DAY, JUNE 6, 1944, FIVE NAVAL ASSAULT FORCES CARRIED 156-THOUSAND TROOPS IN 4-THOUSAND SHIPS TO THE BEACHES OF NORMANDY, AND THE ALLIED INVASION OF EUROPE WAS UNDER WAY. TODAY, THE NORMANDY BEACHES HAVE REVERTED TO THEIR PRE-WAR PEACE-TIME PLEASURES, BUT THIS WEEK THOUSANDS OF MEN WHO TOOK PART IN THAT LANDING ARE REVISITING THE SCENE, AND RE-LIVING SOME OF THE MEMORIES.

EVEN TODAY THERE ARE STILL REMINDERS OF THE D-DAY LANDINGS. ON THE BEACH AT ARROMANCHES THE SKELETON OF A PONTOON FROM ONE OF THE FAMED 'MULBERRY' FLOATING HARBOURS STILL LIES ON ITS SIDE; BULLET HOLES STILL CAN BE SEEN ON THE WALLS ALONG THE BEACH AND GERMAN BLOCK-HOUSES STILL STAND AS GAUNT REMINDERS -- ALTHOUGH MANY OF THEM HAVE NOW BEEN PUT TO NOVEL USES. IN THE TOWN OF ARROMANCHES ITSELF THERE IS A MUSEUM HOUSING RELICS OF THE INVASION.

FOR ANYONE LANDING TODAY ON THE NORMANDY BEACHES, THE VIEW WOULD BE VERY DIFFERENT TO THAT ON D-DAY. WHERE THEY HAD SEEN BLAZING HOUSES ALONG THE SEAFRONT, THERE NOW STANDS ROW AFTER OF SMART, WHITE CHALETS AND BUNGALOWS. INCONGRUOUSLY, A BLOCK-HOUSE NESTLES AMONG THE HOUSES. ANOTHER BLOCKHOUSE HAS BEEN CONVERTED INTO A NIGHTCLUB. AT ANOTHER POSITION ON THE BEACH, WHERE THE GERMANS HAD ESTABLISHED A STRONGLY FORTIFIED AND CLEVERLY HIDDEN GUN EMPLACEMENT, A FAMILY NOW LIVES.

IN ALL, ON D-DAY THERE WERE 11-THOUSAND ALLIED CASUALTIES, 2,500 OF THEM DIED. THE GERMANS, TOO, SUFFERED HEAVY LOSSES, AND IN A SMALL NORMANDY TOWN THERE IS A CEMETERY DEVOTED TO THEIR DEAD. THEIR HEADSTONES ARE GREY STONE BLOCKS LET INTO THE SOIL, MANY OF THEM BEARING THE SIMPLE LEGEND: "A GERMAN SOLDIER".
