  • Description

SOME 400 MEMBERS OF THE DANISH CAMPAIGN FOR NUCLEAR DISARMAMENT STAGED A 24-HOUR SIT-DOWN STRIKE IN COPENHAGEN, JUNE 2, IN PROTEST AGAINST THE FIRST OF THE AMERICAN HIGH ALTITUDE NUCLEAR TESTS IN THE PACIFIC, SCHEDULED FOR JUNE 4.

THE DEMONSTRATION WAS INTENDED TO COINCIDE WITH THE PERIOD OF THE TEST, BUT IT WAS POSTPONED TWICE JUNE 3. NO OFFICIAL EXPLANATION WAS GIVEN, BUT CLOUD COVER THICK ENOUGH TO OBSTRUCT OBSERVATION AND PHOTOGRAPHY WAS REPORTED IN THE VICINITY OF JOHNSTON ISLAND, WHERE THE TEST WILL TAKE PLACE.

A SOVIET GOVERNMENT STATEMENT ISSUED JUNE 3 WARNED THAT THE UNITED STATES WOULD AGGRAVATE THE INTERNATIONAL SITUATION IF IT WENT AHEAD WITH THE HIGH ALTITUDE TESTS, CONTENDING THAT IT WOULD MAKE FUTURE MANNED-SPACE FLIGHTS HAZARDOUS. SOME WESTERN SCIENTISTS HAVE ALSO VOICED OBJECTIONS, INSISTING THAT HIGH ALTITUDE TESTS WOULD IMPAIR COMMUNICATIONS.
