  • Description

Fourteen astronauts from the National Aeronautics and space Administration's Manned Spacecraft Center at Houston, Texas took water survival training at the Naval Air Station at Pensacola, Florida Tuesday (22 September).

The 14 astronauts, who joined the space program in November were flown in late Monday afternoon. They took to the water early Tuesday morning and returned to Houston late that afternoon. They were the third group to take the water survival training at Pensacola.

After an early morning lecture and a dunking in a device which simulates a plane crashing into water, they got a lecture and then had a half-hour practice on basic swimming strokes and treading water while wearing flight suits and shoes.

In the afternoon, they put on their full pressure space suits and made a simulated crash in a mock capsule. Later they practiced parachute landings in the water in full space suits.

There was also simulated helicopter rescue practice as well as swimming in the space suits and what to do in case their suits became flooded and how to re-inflate them.
