Background: The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Zaid Bin Sultan, arrived in Tunisia on Thursday (1 August) to attend celebrations marking the 71st birthday of President Habib Bourguiba. The celebrations continue until 7 August. The Sheikh arrived from Iraq on the second leg of a tour which will also take him to Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and Libya.
During his stay in Tunisia, Sheikh Zaid was scheduled to have several meeting with the President to discuss Arab and world affairs. President Bourguiba also hosted a state dinner in the Sheikh's honour on Thursday night.
In recent years, the two countries have enjoyed excellent relations, strengthened by their Arab-Islamic backgrounds. An editorial in the Tunis newspaper La Presse welcomed the Sheikh's visit. The newspaper also applauded the support by both countries for the recovery of "The rights of the Palestinian people."
