  • Description

The Council of Science ministers of the European Economic Community have been meeting in Brussels to discuss the future of the EEC's nuclear research agency -- Euratom.

The European Atomic Energy Agency was formed in 1955, but has been crippled in the last five years by lack of a definite research programme. Some community members, notably France, feel the agency duplicates research done by individual member nations.

The Council of Ministers of the newly-expanded Common Market, meeting at the same time, are ultimately responsible for the decision on Euratom's future. Before the science ministers is a proposal to wind up the agency's work, as well as one to set up a five-year research programme.
