  • Description

The Israeli border settlement of Nahal Gesher sustained the most serious damage among those hit on Monday (June 8) during the five-hour artillery, tank and air battle along the entire length of Syria's border with Israel.

Nahal Gesher is one of eleven such settlements, outposts of the agricultural corps of the Israeli army, established in occupied Syria in the three years since the June war.

The battle itself represented a new level of escalation in hostilities on the Syria-Israel border. On June 8 a Damascus military communique said that as many as 60 Israeli soldiers were killed or wounded in the action.

From Tel Aviv came the announcement that one eighteen year-old girl soldier was killed, and ten other israeli soldiers, four of them young women, were wounded in Nahal Gesher. The young soldiers were on National Service duty at the settlement.

The Tel Aviv spokesman also said that the Syrian shell which caused the casualties had hot the village before the soldiers could reach shelter.

Elsewhere in the heights, settlers stayed in shelters until a cease-fire was arranged by the United Nations observer mission.
