• Short Summary

MR. HAROLD WILSON, LEADER OF BRITAIN'S LABOUR PARTY, RETURNED TO LONDON THIS MORNING (FRIDAY) FROM?

  • Description

MR. HAROLD WILSON, LEADER OF BRITAIN'S LABOUR PARTY, RETURNED TO LONDON THIS MORNING (FRIDAY) FROM HIS LIVERPOOL CONSTITUENCY. ALTHOUGH HE RETURNED ALMOST CERTAINLY AS BRITAIN'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER, HE WAS IN TIME TO SEE HIS OVERNIGHT LEAD OVER SIR ALEC DOUGLAS-HOME'S CONSERVATIVE PARTY BEING STEADILY REDUCED FROM ITS OVERNIGHT TOTAL OF 67.

THE FIGURE OF 67 WAS REACHED ON THE RESULTS KNOWN OVERNIGHT - MORE THAN HALF THE TOTAL. BUT IN THE RESULTS THAT ARE NOT KNOWN UNTIL THE DAY AFTER THE ELECTION, THE CONSERVATIVES HAVE MORE SEATS THAN LABOUR, LARGELY IN RURAL AREAS.

AS THESE RESULTS BECAME KNOWN THE LABOUR LEAD WAS SLOWLY REDUCED. WHEN THIS FILM WAS SHOT THE LEAD HAS BEEN REDUCED TO LESS THAN 40 AND WAS CONTINUING TO DECREASE AS MORE RESULTS CAME IN.

WITH THE FINAL RESULTS STILL UNKNOWN IT APPEARS THAT MR. HAROLD WILSON WILL BE BRITAIN'S NEXT PRIME MINISTER. HOWEVER HIS LABOUR PARTY'S MAJORITY IN THE 630 SEAT HOUSE OF COMMONS COULD BE VERY SMALL, POSSIBLY LESS THAN 20.

THIS IS NOT UNPRECEDENTED. IN 1951 THE CONSERVATIVES GOVERNED UNTIL 1955 WITH A MAJORITY OF ONLY 17.

AT ONE O'CLOCK (1400 GMT) POLITICAL COMMENTATORS SAID THAT THE LABOUR MAJORITY COULD BE LESS THAN 10 SEATS.
