    AIR FRANCE - THE FRENCH INTERNATIONAL AIRLINE - WAS PARALYSED COMPLETELY TODAY (WEDNESDAY) BY A STRIKE OF 2,500 PILOTS, HOSTESSES AND STEWARDS SEEKING HIGHER PAY. AS NIGHT FELL ONLY 10 OF THE AIRLINE'S SCHEDULED 60 OUTGOING FLIGHTS HAD LEFT ORLY AIRPORT, PARIS AND ONLY 20 OF THE 70 SCHEDULED INCOMING FLIGHTS HAD LANDED.

    THE AIRLINE IS CHARTERING PLANES FROM OTHER COMPANIES FOR THE FEW SERVICES IT IS OPERATING DURING THE FOUR DAY STRIKE. TONIGHT (WEDNESDAY) THE AIRLINE ANNOUNCED THAT IT HOPED TO MANAGE 18 DEPARTURES TOMORROW.

    THE FRENCH TRANSPORT MINISTER, M. MARC JACQUET, TOLD THE CABINET HE OPPOSED THE PILOTS' CLAIM BECAUSE THEY WERE ALREADY EARNING AN AVERAGE 10,000 FRANCS (ABOUT 800 STERLING) MONTHLY.

    THIS FOUR DAY STRIKE - THE THIRD STOPPAGE TO HIT THE STATE RUN AIRLINE THIS YEAR - IS ESTIMATED TO BE COSTING AIR FRANCE ABOUT 3-MILLION FRANCS (ABOUT GBP230,000 STERLING) DAILY. THE MINISTER ISSUED A WARNING SAYING THAT IT COULD ONLY HELP THE COMPANY'S RIVALS.
