The small Italian mountain village of Levrange, near Brescia, was December 12, the scene of a major military operation. Its 300 inhabitants were evacuated - some forcibly - to nearby army barracks and temporary billets with villagers of nearby towns.
Incessant rainfall has completely under???ded the village foundations, and it is slowly but surely sliding into the valley below .... a drop of some 2,275 feet.
Furniture and personal belongings were piled high in the village square in readiness for transportation by the army trucks. While bulging and cracked walls crashed to the ground in clouds of dust, villagers continued to salvage precious effects - large and small - and stagger beneath their burden to the square.
Most of the villagers are elderly persons and children. Those able to work had migrated to France, Switzerland and other places in their search for means to support their families back at Levrange. Many of the old people defied persuasion to leave their homes, they preferred to die sooner than desert the condemned village that had been their lifelong home.
