  • Description

The Greater London Council today (Tuesday) inaugurated a new garbage conversion scheme which is expected to reduce the danger of pollution to the city and also return a profit of one million pounds sterling per year.

A huge garbage incinerator will be linked to generators which will produce electricity for national consumption. Waste products with a market value will also be produced.

Like most large cities, London is seriously threatened by pollution from its mounting tons of garbage. For years the problem of garbage disposal has become increasingly acute.

With and investment of 10 million pounds, the Greater London Council has taken the first steps towards diminishing the risk to health and the manpower required in garbage disposal. The Chairman of the GLC, Mr. Desmond Plummer, predicted today that the new conversion scheme would eventually become standard equipment throughout Britain.

At the opening of the new plant today, he explained its financial benefits.
