  • Description

More than 27 people are dead following an apparently motiveless planting of a bomb abroad a bus in Nairobi, Kenya, on Saturday night (March 1).

Many of the victims of the blast are thought to be women and children. Ninety people were injured.

The powerful blast devastated the centre of the bus and blew a large hole in its right hand side. Extensive damage was also caused to a bus parked alongside.

Seventeen people died immediately and ten later in hospital. Another 35 are still being treated in hospital. Some are seriously injured.

There were scenes of panic after the explosion and several people were injured in the stampede away from the bus terminal. The confusion was added to by at least three hoax bomb calls to police about bombs being placed in other parts of the Kenyan capital.

The explosion was the third in Nairobi in the last two weeks, but was the first to claim a life.
