  • Description

Britain's Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas-Home ended his series of talks with Egyptian President Anwar Sadat on Wednesday (Sept. 15) with an informal meeting abroad a yacht, a few miles (metres) outside Cairo.

At his last press conference before leaving for Rabat, Sir Alec suggested that big Four action on the lines of the Berlin negotiations may be the best way of bringing peace to the Middle East.

He said it was vital that the mission of the U.N. Middle East envoy, Dr. Gunnar Jarring, be re-activated by the big Four, with the co-operation of Israel.

SYNOPSIS: Britain's Foreign Secretary Sir Alec Douglas - Home, has ended his talks with Egyptian leaders in Cairo with a call for the urgent re-introduction of the United Nations Peace Mission, headed by Dr. Gunnar Jarring. His final meeting with President Sadat was held on board a yacht, fifteen miles outside Cairo. Lady Douglas-Home and Mrs. Sadat were also there, and the atmosphere was described as very friendly. Sir Alec has taken the lead in suggesting that the Big Four Powers, the United States, The Soviet Union, Britain and France, should get the Jarring mission going with the Israelis co-operation to achieve a Middle East agreement in the same way that one was achieved in the Berlin negotiations.

Sir Alec refused at a press conference later to be drawn on criticisms from Israel and some circles in Britain that he was taking a pro-Arab line on terms for a settlement. Objection has been taken by the Israelis to a Cairo speech in which he insisted the israelis must withdraw from Sinai back to the lines of the old international frontier.
