THE WIMBLEDON WOMEN'S SINGLES CHAMPION, BILLY JEAN KING OF THE UNITED STATES, HAD A HARD WIN OVER FELLOW AMERICAN, INGRID LOFDAHL, IN THEIR FIRST ROUND MATCH IN THE 1967 WIMBLEDON CHAMPIONSHIPS TODAY (TUESDAY). MISS KING MADE A HESITANT START BUT RECOVERED AN ENDED UP TAKING 59 MINUTES TO WIN 8-6,6-2.

MISS KING, WHO IS THIS YEAR'S NUMBER ONE SEED, SHOWED EARLY SIGNS OF NERVOUSNESS AS SHE PLAYED ON WIMBLEDON'S FAMED CENTRE COURT.

SHE LOST HER SERVICE IN THE FIRST SET AND WAS DOWN FOUR-FIVE BEFORE FIGHTING BACK TO TAKE IT 8-6. IN THE SECOND SET, SHE TOOK A FIRM GRIP AND NEVER GAVE HER 23-YEAR-OLD OPPONENT A CHANCE TO GET BACK IN THE MATCH.
