  • Description

ACROSS THE DJITARUM RIVER NEAR DJATILUHU VILLAGE IN WEST JAVA, A FRENCH COMPANY USING FRENCH AND ITALIAN EQUIPMENT, IS BUILDING WHAT PROMISES TO BE INDONESIA'S LARGEST MULTI-PURPOSE DAM TO PROVIDE HYDRO-ELECTRIC POWER AND WATER FOR IRRIGATION.

STARTED FIVE YEARS AGO, THE WORK WILL BE COMPLETED IN 1964. NEEDED ARE 10 MILLION CUBIC METRES OF ROCK AND CLAY, 300,000 METRES OF CONCRETE. THE DAM WILL BE 110 METRES HIGH, 1200 METRES LONG, 10 METRES THICK AT THE TOP. THE RESERVOIR THUS FORMED WILL CONTAIN 3,000 MILLION CUBIC METRES OF WATER.

THE NEARBY HILLS WILL DISAPPEAR AS THE 250 EUROPEANS AND 6,000 INDONESIANS CHIP AWAY TO PROVIDE SOME OF THE DAM'S RAW MATERIALS, BUT THE RESULTING PADDY FIELDS WILL HAVE INCREASED PRODUCTION CAUSED BY A MORE PLENTIFUL SUPPLY OF WATER.
