  • Description

NIKITA KHRUSHCHEV, THE PEASANT WHO ROSE TO RULE THE SOVIET UNION FOR MORE THAN A DECADE, WAS BURIED IN MOSCOW ON MONDAY (13 SEPTEMBER), ALL BUT IGNORED BY THE MEN WHO OUSTED HIM NEARLY SEVEN YEARS AGO.

HIS FUNERAL WAS A SIMPLE AND DIGNIFIED ONE IN A FAR CORNER OF MOSCOW'S NOVODEVICHYE CEMETERY, ALTHOUGH LESSER FIGURES HAVE BEEN ACCORDED THE HONOURS OF A RED SQUARE FUNERAL AND A PLACE IN THE KREMLIN WALL.

THE KREMLIN LEADERS SENT HIM ONLY A BIG WREATH TO STAND ON HIS GRAVE, AND ANNOUNCED HIS DEATH, ON SATURDAY (11 SEPTEMBER) AFTER HIS THIRD HEART ATTACK, "WITH SORROW."
THIS FILM IS A TELERECORDING FROM EUROVISION OF A FILM SHOT BY THE FRENCH TELEVISION SERVICE ORTF. IT HAS BEEN DELAYED BECAUSE SOVIET CUSTOMS REFUSED TO ALLOW IT OUT OF THE COUNTRY.

SYNOPSIS: NIKITA KHRUSHCHEV, THE PEASANT WHO RULED THE SOVIET UNION FOR MORE THAN A DECADE AND PAVED THE WAY FOR PEACEFUL CO-EXISTENCE WITH THE WEST, WAS BURIED IN MOSCOW ON MONDAY, ALL BUT IGNORED BY THE MEN WHO OUSTED HIM NEARLY SEVEN YEARS AGO.

HIS WIDOW, NINA PETROVNA KHRUSHCHEV, ALSO MADE AN IMPACT ON THE WORLD AS SHE ACCOMPANIED HER HUSBAND ON HIS TRAVELS. OTHERS OF HIS FAMILY PRESENT WERE HIS ENGINEER SON SERGEI, AND DAUGHTERS RADA AND YULIA, NONE OF TODAY'S LEADING POLITICAL FIGURES ATTENDED, BUT POET YEVGENI YEVTUSHENKO WAS AMONG THE MOURNERS.

MR. KHRUSCHEV'S MEDALS WERE BORNE BEFORE THE BIER TO THE GRAVESIDE ON A SCARLET CUSHION, BUT THE ACHIEVEMENTS WHICH WON THEM FOR HIM WERE NEVER MORE THAN HINTED AT. IT WAS ALMOST AS IF MR. KHRUSHCHEV HAD NEVER BEEN LEADER OF THE WORLD'S THIRD BIGGEST NATION.

POLICE AND SECURITY TROOPS SET UP WHAT AMOUNTED TO A CORDON AROUND THE CEMETERY, KEEPING OUT ORDINARY RUSSIANS WHO WANTED TO PAY THEIR LAST RESPECTS TO THE DISCREDITED LEADER.

THERE WERE ALMOST HALF AS MANY FOREIGN JOURNALISTS AND DIPLOMATS AS RUSSIAN MOURNERS. THERE WERE ONLY A FEW HINTS FORM SPEAKERS AT THE FUNERAL OF THE DEBT OWED BY MILLIONS OF RUSSIANS TO MR. KHRUSHCHEV FOR RESTORING LIBERTY, OR AT LEAST A POSTHUMOUS GOOD NAME, TO VICTIMS OF STALIN'S PURGES.

NONE-THE-LESS THERE WERE MASSES OF FLOWERS AT THE GRAVE IN MOSCOW'S NOVODEVICHYE CEMETERY, AND FOUR BIG WREATHS, INCLUDING ONE FROM HIS FAMILY, ONE FROM THE COMMUNIST PARTY CENTRAL COMMITTEE, AND THE COUNCIL OF MINISTERS, AND A THIRD FROM AN "UN-NAMED GROUP OF COMRADES." FAR LESSER FIGURES THAN MR. KHRUSHCHEV HAVE BEEN GIVEN THE POMP AND CEREMONY OF A RED SQUARE FUNERAL, AND A PLACE BY THE KREMLIN WALL. INSTEAD HE LIES IN A CEMETERY RESERVES FOR PROMINENT FIGURES BESIDE A FAMOUS 16TH. CENTURY MONASTERY, UNDER A SIMPLE WHITE MARBLE GRAVESTONE BEARING HIS NAME AND DATES.
