  • Description

A ourly Catholic priest, L'Abbe Simon, pulled off his black robes at a church fete in the village of Viry-Chatillon, near Paris, yesterday, July 20, and dived from 115 feet into 12 feet of river water.

This was the 62nd time that L'Abbe Simon, 45, has risked his life in ten years to aid charities. Hundreds of spectators saw him plunge from his diving board 115 feet feet up on a scaffolding.

Yesterday the river was lower than usual - three feet below the safety mark of 15 feet. Each time he dives he says he is afraid but he knows that God goes with him.

He started his high diving at the end of the Second World War to start a fund to help rebuild the bombed village church and houses as quickly as possible.

With the rebuilding finished, he continued his high diving - L'Abbe Simon is a good swimmer - to aid local charities. And he organised a transport service to help the villagers travel to work and back.
