  • Description

CYCLING FROM BELGIUM: JACQUES ANQUETIL, FRANCE'S GREATEST RIDER, YESTERDAY (MONDAY) ADDED ANOTHER CLASSIC TO HIS LONG LIST. HE BEAT EUROPE'S TOP RIDERS TO WIN THE RACE FROM LIEGE TO BASTOGNE AND BACK. HE COVERED THE 157 MILES (252 KMS) IN 6 HOURS 59 MINUTES 45 SECONDS.

NINETY-NINE RIDERS SET OUT FROM LIEGE, INCLUDING THE GREAT NAMES OF THE EUROPEAN CIRCUIT, SUCH AS ANQUETIL, RIK VAN LOOY, FELICE GIMONDI, RUDI ALTIG, TOMMY SIMPSON, RAYMOND POULIDOR, AND SEAMUS ELLIOT.

DESPITE THE TORRID HEAT, A GRUELLING PACE WAS SET FROM THE START. AT LA ROCHE, 44 MILES (71 KMS) FROM THE START, IT WAS THE BELGIAN STAR, GEORGES VAN CONINGSLOO, LEADING THE BUNCH. BUT THE HILLS SOON BEGAN TO TAKE THEIR TOLL, AND AT BASTOGNE IT WAS EMILE DAEMS AND MICHELE DANCELLI SETTING THE PACE.

JACQUES ANQUETIL, FIVE TIMES WINNER OF THE TOUR DE FRANCE, STAYED WITH THEM, SAVING HIS ENERGY FOR THE STEEPER HILLS TO COME. AT SPA, 116 MILES (187 KMS) COVERED, YET ANOTHER BELGIAN, JOSEPH SPRUYT, HAD TAKEN OVER THE LEAD.

17 MILES (27 KMS) FURTHER, ON THE COTE DE THEUX, IT WAS ANQUETIL IN THE LEAD, WHICH HE WAS TO KEEP UNTIL THE FINISH AT LIEGE STADIUM. HE SPURTED AWAY TO WIN BY NEARLY FIVE MINUTES FROM BELGIUM'S VICTOR VAN SCHIL TO GIVE HIM A FLYING START TO THE 1966 EUROPEAN CIRCUIT.
