Before leaving Dahomey at the end of a two-day visit, Nigerian Head of State.... General Yakubu Gowon....was entertained by a troupe of musicians and dancers on Wednesday (19 August).
The music was provided mainly be the menfolk, who beat out a variety of tom-tom rhythms, for the agile women and youngsters of the dance group. Many of the ceremonial dances and items of Dahomey folklore, watched by General Gowon, dated back to ancient kingdoms.
Earlier during the visit, which General Gowon described as a complete success, he discussed many aspects of relations between Nigeria and Dahomey with Dahomey's President, Hubert Maga. The possibility of relaxing customs and immigration controls on their mutual border was one of the topics discussed, and a cooperation treaty was also signed.
General Gowon returned to Lagos on Wednesday evening the recipient of the Grand Cross of Dahomey.
