  • Description

The third International Classical Marathon race was run between the Marathon plain and Athens, Greece, Oct 27, by 25 competitors from eight countries.

Runners from Austria, Finland, Greece, Italy, New Zealand, Switzerland, West Germany and Yugoslavia were at the start to cover a distance of 42,195 meters (26 miles 385 yards) from the village of Marathon to the Panathenian stadium.

To the lively tunes of a military band the runners set off on their gruelling trek. Two runners from New Zealand and three Finnish competitors soon tore away from the general field, with New Zealander Julian leading Oksanen Eino until about 500 yards from the finish.

Oksanen Eino of Finland was first to break the tape, in a time of 2 hours 26 minutes 30 seconds. Julian of New Zealand was second, and Jukka of Finland third.

The Classical Marathon is a re-enactment of the outstanding historical feat of Athenian Pheidippides, Olympic champion runner of his time, who some 2,500 years ago brought the news to Athens of Miltiades' victory over the invading Persians at Marathon, gasping the legendary "Rejoice, we conquer!" before collapsing dead from exhaustion.
