    In Kinshasa, President Mobutu has formally nominated for his month's Presidential elections.

    At a ceremony in the Supreme Court, attended by members of the Government and the country's political bureau, the President handed in his nomination papers.

    Later the Supreme Court met, and in the presence of Government representative, ratified the President's candidature.

    The President will be the only candidate at the election which is due to be held on October the 31st and November the 1st. The country's only political party, the People's Revolutionary Movement, nominated President Mobutu as its candidate at is convention last May. A minimum age of 40 was set for Presidents and General Mobutu filed his nomination papers shortly after celebrating his 40th birthday.

    Later next month, the country will have its first National Assembly elections since General Mobutu came to power in a coup d'etat five years ago. For the last four years he has ruled by presidential decree. More than 400 candidates have been selected by the people's Revolutionary Movement and every citizen over 18 will have a vote.
