  • Description

Representatives of the Greek and Turkish communities in Cyprus met in Nicosia yesterday (21 Sept) to continue their talks in an effort to end the long-standing conflict between the two communities on the Mediterranean Island State.

Representatives the Greek community was Mr. Glafkos clerides and Mr. Rauf Denktash negotiated for the Turkish Cypriots. The talks are continuing after a summer break and Monday's discussions were held at Mr. Clerides' residence. More than two years of discussions between the two leaders have so far failed to overcome a number of basic disagreements. These include the desire of the Turkish Cypriots for a measure of automony within an independent republic.

The talks help create an atmosphere of co-operation on the island. This assists in maintaining law and order in Cyprus in an attempt to avoid clashes between the two sides.
