  • Description

The trawler was spotted by radar...then ran aground during a night-time machine gun flight with two United States Coast Guard Cutters.

The seamen escaped to the beach...joining a Vietcong force there. Helicopters from the United States Navy's Tortuga...a landing ship dock...and other armed helicopters...then hit the trawler.. setting it afire...The pilots apparently did not know the trawler had been abandoned.

When the Vietcong fled from the beach. Coast Guardsmen boarded the 120-foot steel-hulled -- and tried to float her off the reef. Others fished in the murky holds and found at least 100 tons of weapons and ammunitions -- perhaps the largest amount seized from the enemy in this war. The weapons included 75 and 57 millimetre recciless rifles - (cannons) - fifty calibre machine guns...mortars...rifles, pistols..and about ten tons of ammunition for all these weapons. There were enough arms and ammunition to equip 2 Vietcong battalions-about 1,000 men--
The weapons and ammunitions were loaded aboard whatever vessels the navy and coast guard could get to the area. Some of the vessels made several runs...from the trawler...to the Tortuga...where ---the weapons and ammunitions were taken to await official inspection.

But many of the weapons...and some of the ammunition ended up on the motorized junks operated by the South Vietnamese Navy. When the Americans were fighting the fire on the trawler, some South Vietnamese sailors refused to help...being interested only in getting as much loot as possible onto THEIR junks. Some Americans finally had to point pistols at their allied to get them to help fight the fire.

When the trawler -- which was believed to have started its journey from the North Vietnam port of Haiphong...finally was detected...it was ???. Vietcong sampans were alongside...ready to carry the supplies to the enemy on the beach.

After south Vietnamese troops were landed to pursue the fleeing Vietcong...American jets fighter were called in to starff and bomb the area.......So the enemy ended the day on the run...after coming exceedingly close to completing a vital resupply mission. H.T. NBC News..with the United States Navy, off Vietnam.
