  • Description

A week-end of anti-nuclear demonstrations outside the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment, Foulness Island, Essex, was culminated, Apr 25. 21 members of the Direct Action section of the campaign marched on a road block at the entrance to the island, lay down on the road, and were arrested by 50 waiting Essex and War Department police, who transferred them bodily to waiting vans.

The demonstration commenced Apr 23 with a meeting in Southend, followed by an eight-mile march by 200 campaigners to the road-block at the Foulness nuclear sites. Marchers aimed to draw attention to the Foulness nuclear establishment as being an "Off-shoot" of the Atomic Research Station at Aldermaston - scene of the recent mammoth 4-day march on Trafalgar Square.

Leader of the marchers, arrested by police, was 54-year-old Will Warren from Oxford - a man who has already been to prison three times for demonstrations. Speaking before the demonstration he said. "We all realise we are liable to arrest, but none of us care. If the police try to stop us then we will lie down in the roadway in front of the lorries bringing workers to the island."
Each of the 21 demonstrators arrested by police were later sentenced to one week's imprisonment.
