  • Description

In Sudan a West German, named as Rolf Steiner, has been arrested and accused of leading secessionist troops against Sudan Government forces.

Sudanese officials produced Steiner, handcuffed, at a press conference in khartoum last week.

The date of Stainer's trial is expected to be announced in a few days.

A Cairo newspaper, Al-Akhbar, says Sudan wants to hold a Nuremburg-style trial in which a Pan-African tribunal would try Steiner.

Mr Diallo Telli, secretary general of the Organisation of African Unity, who attended the press conference at which Steiner's arrest was announced, described it as a major African victory which should mark the beginning of the end of white mercenary activities in Africa.

A Sudanese newspaper, the Nile Mirror, claimed that 40-year-old Steiner had fought as a mercenary in Indo-China, the Congo, and Nigeria as well as in Sudan.
