Not a great match. Plenty of atmosphere for the big occasion, but not too much excitement. There was early Liverpool pressure, including three corners, but little to justify the bookmakers' odds making Liverpool the Cup favourites - Bristol City the outsiders. Bristol's goalkeeper, Cashley, had little to do except show that he had a safe pair of hands. The Bristol defence did a very good job in the first Half, suppressing Liverpool's dangerous front runners, Toshack, Highway, and Keegan. Bristol City winger Trevor Tainton -- who's baing watched by several first division clubs -- caused Liverpool one or two problems. A dangerous free-kick situation bounces off the Bristol wall, and another Liverpool attack comes to nothing. Full-back Lindsay, half looking for a penalty, and not getting it. Having lived comfortably with Liverpool throughout the first half, Bristol must have felt there was real hope of despatching another First Division club to reach the semi-finals. But a lucky goal for Toshack (picking up a rebound) three minutes into the second half, turned the game. One-nil to Liverpool, and from that moment their composure was never shaken. Hard luck for Bristol City -- even though they were without their captain, Jeff Merrick. The game could still have gone either way. But now it's Liverpool through to the last four.

Background: Bristol City soccer fans arrived at the Ashton Gate ground in Bristol on Saturday (9 March) hoping to see their heroes despatch yet another First Division team in the Football Association (F.A.) Cup competition. Having beaten Leads United in the last round, the young Bristol City squad now had to beat Liverpool for a semi-final place.

But the fans were to be disappointed. In the first half Bristol made a very creditable showing. Despite early Liverpool pressure, there was little to justify the bookmakers' odds making Liverpool the Cup favorites, with Bristol City outsiders.

Until the interval, there was little for Cashley (the City Keeper) to do, and the home-side defence did a good job in suppressing the notoriously dangerous Liverpool forwards Toshack. Highway, and Keegan. The Bristol City winger, Trevor Tainton -- who is being watched by several first division clubs -- managed to cause Liverpool one or two anxious moments.

But three minutes into the second half, Liverpool had the break they needed to get their game off the ground. Toshack, challenged by Dryadals, went up for a dropping lob from Keegan. The ball spun down over Oryadale's shoulder and Toshack ran on to it, with the Bristol City goalmouth wide open except for the hapless Cashley. Toshack drove the ball wide past the keeper to make it one-nil.

From then on, Liverpool never lost their composure, and although Bristol continued to play well, the northerners clung on to their slim lead until the final whistle. For most of the game Liverpool were far from their best form, and although Bristol were without skipper Jeff Morrick, the match might have gone either way if Toshack had not had that lucky bouncs.
