  • Description

ABOUT 6,000 INDONESIAN STUDENTS MARCHED ON THE PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IN D JAKARTA ON THURSDAY (22 JANUARY) TO STAGE THE LARGEST SHOW OF FORCE IN THEIR WEEK-LONG PROTEST AGAINST RISING PRICES OF KEROSENE AND PETROL.

ONLY THE DAY BEFORE, PRESIDENT SUHARTO REPEATED THAT HE WOULD NOT LOWER PRICES AND CALLED ON THE STUDENTS TO STOP THEIR PROTESTS. HE WAS NOT IN THE PALACE DURING YESTERDAY'S MARCH.

ARMED TROOPS BLOCKED THE STUDENTS' PATH AND DIVERTED THEM AROUND THE BUILDING. STUDENT LEADERS SAID THEIR "SHOW OF FORCE" WAS TO CONVINCE THE INDONESIAN GOVERNMENT THAT THE DEMONSTRATIONS WOULD CONTINUE.

HOWEVER, THERE WERE NO INCIDENTS DURING THE MARCH ORGANISED BY THE STUDENTS ACTION FRONT (KAPPI) WHICH JOINED THE PROTESTS FOR THE FIRST TIME.

THE STUDENTS WENT ON FROM THE PALACE TO PASS THE OFFICES OF THE STATE-OWNED PERTAMINA OIL COMPANY WHERE ABOUT 50 MARINES WITH MACHINE-GUNS STOOD GUARD. PERTAMINA HAS BECOME A PRIME TARGET FOR THE PROTESTORS WHO HAVE ALLEGED CORRUPTION AMONGST ITS DIRECTORS.

THE STUDENTS DEMANDED THAT THE GOVERNMENT SHOULD TAX THE OIL COMPANY AND NOT THE POORER PEOPLE WHO RELY ON KEROSENE FOR LIGHTING AND FUEL.

THE STUDENTS ALSO CALLED FOR A DECREASE IN THE PRICE OF RICE, WHICH ALONG WITH OTHER COMMODITIES, HAS RISEN BECAUSE OF THE 50 PER CENT INCREASE IN PETROL PRICES.
