  • Description

Calm has returned to strike-bound Argentina after nearly a week of clashes between demonstrators and police in six Argentine cities. The strike was called by the powerful General Labour Confederation (C.G.T.) to protest against the social and economic policies of the military-backed government of President Roberto Levingston.

Tens of thousands of workers have supported the stoppage, and there have been frequent demonstrations in favour of higher wages and changes in social and economic policies.

The most serious clashes between strikers, demonstrators and the police have occurred in the provincial cities of Argentina. In Buenos Aires scores of police reinforcements were drafted to strategic areas of the city to prevent violence. In the provincial cities a number of people have been killed or seriously wounded in clashes with peacekeeping authorities.
