Background: Graumans Chinese Theatre made a colourful setting for the opening night in Hollywood of the film "West Side Story", December 13. The stage version of this musical, with its setting in New York's West Side, was a long-running Broadway success.

Reporters, photographers and crowds of onlookers, turned out to watch the West Coast opening - a benefit performance in aid of hospitals and attended by a bevy of Hollywood stars. Early arrivals were two stars from the film, Rita Moreno and George Chakiris, followed by singer Dean Martin, Tony Martin and his wife dancer Cyd Charisse. Other actors and actresses present were Eva Marie Saint, Audrey Hepburn with her husband Mel Ferrer, James Garner with his wife, Cesar Romero and, last but not least, the top star of the "West Side Story" Natalie Wood with Warren Beatty.
