  • Description

FIGHTING CONTINUES IN SOUTH VIETNAM AS UNITED STATES TROOPS WITHDRAW IN PREPARATION FOR A COMPLETE HAND-OVER TO SOUTH VIETNAMESE FORCES. ONE OF THE BATTLES INVOLVING U.S. TROOPS THIS WEEK WAS AT AU SHAU VALLEY, NOT FAR FROM THE COAST.

THIS FILM HAS A REPORTER'S VOICE-OVER COMMENTARY ON THE SOUND TRACK, BUT FOR THE PURPOSES OF TRANSLATION A TRANSCRIPT OF THIS HAS BEEN WRITTEN ON THE COMMENTARY PAGE OF THIS SCRIPT.

SYNOPSIS: FIREBASE GLADIATOR -- A FORTRESS ON A MOUNTAIN PEAK BETWEEN THE AU SHAU VALLEY AND THE COAST. AN ACRE OF ARTILLERY AND MORTAR POSITIONS MANNED BY A COMPANY OF THE THIRD BRIGADE ONE HUNDRED AND FIRST AIRBORNE. IT'S NEARING RICE HARVEST TIME, AND THE NORTH VIETNAMESE IN THE AU SHAU VALLEY ARE REPORTED SHORT FOOD AND SENDING OUT PATROLS TO BUY RICE. AN 81-MILLIMETRE TEAM IS SENT OUT FROM GLADIATOR WHEN ENEMY MOVEMENT IS SUSPECTED ON A TRIAL. A FORAY TO BLOW UP AN ABANDONED ENEMY BUNKER IS A WELCOME DIVERSION.... A CHANCE TO FIRE THE MACHINE-GUNS JOHN WAYNE STYLE, WHEN THERE'S LITTLE CHANCE ANYTHING WILL FIRE BACK. THE MORTAR TEAM WILL RETURN TO THE SAFETY OF GLADIATOR FOR THE NIGHT. FIREBASES LIKE GLADIATOR ARE DESIGNED TO CUT THE TRAILS THAT LEAD FROM THE AU SHAU VALLEY TO THE POPULATED CITIES LIKE QUANG TRI. THE ONE HUNDRED AND FIRST AIRBORNE COMMANDERS HERE SAY THE ONLY U.S. TROOPS OPERATING IN THE AU SHAU VALLEY BEYOND THAT RIDGE OF MOUNTAINS TEN MILES FROM HERE ARE RECOGNISANCE TEAMS.

NEAR FIREBASE GLADIATOR, AN AMERICAN PATROL HAD RUN INTO A SMALL NORTH VIETNAMESE FORCE FACE TO FACE ON A NARROW TRAIL. IN A SHORT FIRE-FIGHT ONE AMERICAN WAS KILLED AND FOUR WOUNDED. GLADIATOR REACTED WITH ARTILLERY AND MORTARS A COMBAT ASSAULT WOULD LATER BED MADE ON THIS RIDGE AFTER A POUNDING FROM MORTAR AND ARTILLERY.

COBRA GUNSHIPS WIPE THE RIDGE WITH ROCKET AND MACHINE GUN FIRE.

THEN, THE TROOPS MOVE IN. CHARLIE COMPANY, FIRST OF THE FIVE-OH-SIX, HIT ANOTHER LANDING ZONE IN AN ATTEMPT TO HEAD OFF THE NORTH VIETNAMESE FORCE REPORTED HEADING TOWARD THE AU SHAU VALLEY. CHARLIE COMPANY DIDN'T MAKE CONTACT WITH THE NORTH VIETNAMESE IN THIS COMBAT ASSAULT. ONE OFFICER TOLD ME THAT THE NORTH VIETNAMESE ARE FOLLOWING THEIR USUAL STRATEGY - WHICH IS "WHEN AMERICANS ATTACK, WITHDRAW. WHEN AMERICANS WITHDRAW, ATTACK."
THE ONE HUNDRED AND FIRST AIRBORNE WILL BE THE LAST FIGHTING AMERICANS TO WITHDRAW FROM VIETNAM, AND MANY OFFICERS I SPOKE TO HERE BELIEVE THE ENEMY MAY BE CONTENT TO WAIT FOR THAT WITHDRAWAL BEFORE ATTACKING AGAIN IN THIS AREA.
