Background: Several thousand Lebanese Christians marched through East Beirut on October 13 and called on the government to sent troops into the Shouf mountains to safeguard Christians' safe return to their homes. Organisers said about 120,000 Christians fled the region last months, when Druze Moslem militiamen moved into the mountains in the wake of Israel's sudden withdrawal. On the same day, delegates from six of Lebanon's warring factions held talks with government representatives to prepare for a national reconciliation conference. Present at the meeting were delegates of the Druze and Shi'ite Moslem militias, two right-wing parties, and two independent Moslem politicians. Three opposition politicians failed to send representatives. Former President Camille Chamoun and another right-wing Christian representatives were said to have caused a stir when they tried to bring their bodyguards into the meeting room. They were, however, prevented from doing so. Druze leader Walid Jumblatt also attended the talks which were held at the Health Ministry. Italian troops of the multi-national peace-keeping force stood guard outside the building, situated near the old 'Green Line', dividing the capital into mainly christian and Moslem districts. The meeting, chaired by Foreign Ministry official Khalil Mekkawi for the Lebanese government, was called to work out an agenda for the reconciliation conference due to be held on October 20.
