  • Description

SCIENTISTS AND ENGINEERS OF THE WEST GERMAN ROCKET SOCIETY LAUNCHED THEIR FIRST TWO-STAGE ROCKETS, SEPT 16, FROM A SITE IN SAHLENBURG NEAR CUXHAVEN. ONE OF THE ROCKETS CONTAINED A GOLDFISH AND THE OTHER A NEWT. THEY WERE PLACED INSIDE A SMALL CAPSULE IN THE NOSE OF THE ROCKETS.

BOTH ROCKETS REACHED ALTITUDES OF ABOUT 22-MILES BEFORE DROPPING BACK TO EARTH. THE CAPSULE CONTAINING THE NEWT WAS LOST, BUT A GERMAN HELICOPTER MANAGED TO FISH THE CAPSULE CONTAINING THE GOLDFISH FROM THE SHALLOW WATER OFF CUXHAVEN.

A SPOKESMAN FOR THE ROCKET SOCIETY TOLD NEWSMEN THAT THE GOLDFISH WOULD BE STUDIED TO GIVE SCIENTISTS AN IDEA OF THE BEHAVIOUR OF ANIMALS WHILE IN A STAGE OF WEIGHTLESSNESS. FURTHER TESTS WITH MORE POWERFUL ROCKETS ARE BEING PLANNED.

WEST GERMANY IS TO PROVIDE THE THIRD STAGE OF THE EUROPEAN ROCKET FOR SPACE RESEARCH. THE OTHER TWO STAGES WILL BE PRODUCED BY BRITAIN AND FRANCE.
