Some of the world's top helicopter pilots and their machines assembled at Middle Wallop (UK) on Wednesday (25 July) for the second World Helicopter Championships...the first time they've been held in the United Kingdom.
The tough championships are the supreme test of the skill of the pilots. They're expected to demonstrate their ability to fly their helicopters to their limits, although the judges won't allow any manoeuvres which might appear dangerous.
The five-day event attracted entrants from Austria, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Poland, The Soviet Union, The United States and the United Kingdom. Of 31 competing teams, twelve entrants were women. The final day of the competitions is Saturday (28 July), when a fly past of all nations taking part will be held.
SYNOPSIS: A big crowd watched on Wednesday as the five-day event began to show the judges some of the finest displays of aerial manoeuvring seen in Britain. There were five teams from the United States, and six of the ten entrants were women. Three of the United States entered ??? were these ??? 472-Gee machines, one of the most popular helicopters in use around the world. Under normal conditions, they can carry three people at around 90 miles an hour...and aerial antics like this are rarely called for, but under the close eye of the judges, the pilots showed that anything the legends said about Bell helicopters was only about half true. They could almost fly upside down.
The Soviet Union's entry for the international championships attracted a lot of interest. Flying these tough eight-seater multi-purpose helicopters, three crews gave a demonstration of some of the most precise manoeuvres in the competition. The M-EYE-Two helicopters did a string of stunts that helicopters just shouldn't be able to do. With speeds well over 150 miles an hour, these tough machines have two gas turbine engines capable of developing 800 horsepower. That big lifting rotor is one hundred percent light alloy. The engines are super light, but they handle, so says the handbook, almost like a sports car. The climax to the eight-nation competition will be a fly-past on Saturday which will take place over the demonstration area.
