  • Description

Groups of gunmen patrolled the streets of west Beirut today, enforcing the general strike called by the left wing-palestinian alliance in protest against the syrian military intervention in Lebanon. Shortages of bread and other essential foodstuffs added to the problems created by the failure of the city's electric power supply yesterday after the last remaining power cable into Beirut was hit by shellfire. The radio station of the left-wing "Murabitum" party reported the general strike was also observed in southern Lebanon, including the coastal towns of Tyre and Sidon. The strike was called for two days ago when the syrian armoured columns entered Lebanon, one in the north and a second in the eastern, Ekaa Valley.

Concerning the electricity failure it is understood here that the little power still available will be reserved for the airport, radio stations and hospitals as well as for keeping a supply of drinking water.

Observers said that gas and petrol supplies would also be cut drastically without electricity.
